History of
hackNY
Founded in 2010 by Evan Korth, Hilary Mason, and Chris Wiggins, hackNY began with a mission to reframe New York City’s burgeoning tech landscape. From its inception, the organization has sought to create and empower a community of student-technologists, offering a compelling alternative to the then-dominant banking industry career path.
Recognizing an opportunity to intertwine academia with tech entrepreneurship, its founders envisioned a space where students of all backgrounds could thrive and grow alongside the city’s dynamic startup ecosystem.
“I thought it was the perfect time for NYC engineering faculty to lead a counter-narrative. I really wanted to help keep kids off the street – Wall Street.”
— Chris Wiggins, cofounder
“At hackNY, we look for students who love to build no matter what major they choose…. We would like to see a community of people who are good at what they do and share what they love with others.”
— Evan Korth, cofounder
hackNY’s impact
Through its programs, hackNY has made significant contributions to the NYC tech community. The organization’s annual summer Fellows Program has been instrumental in nurturing nearly 400 student-technologists over the past 15 years. The fellowship helps pair students in tech with local startups, fostering a symbiotic relationship that benefits both the students and companies.
Fellows receive subsidized co-living housing in NYC along with a Speaker Series focused on using tech for social good. It hosts a diverse array of speakers from company founders to academic and civic leaders. Through these sessions, students learn from the experiences of those who’ve struggled and succeeded from all walks of life, inspiring fellows to pursue their passions.

In addition to its renowned fellowship, hackNY is known for organizing the first-ever student hackathon, a phenomenon that has since spread across the world. Their hackathons have invited students to engage with local startups, collaborate, and learn in a welcoming environment.
Over the years, hackNY's sustained commitment to empowering young tech talent has fostered a resilient and inclusive network with ongoing alumni engagement, monthly events, and inspiring speaker series.

The impact of hackNY extends beyond immediate participants; the organization’s initiatives have cultivated a culture of giving and continuous improvement within its community. Each year, 15% of fellowship “alumNY” demonstrate their commitment by donating back to the program, ensuring future generations can access the same transformative opportunities.
With a proven track record of success, hackNY invites new supporters to join them in nurturing New York City’s next wave of creative and conscientious leaders.
